PLEASE PARDON US FOR THE INCONVENIENCE
Since Christmas Eve, many of you have been sitting in semi-darkness in the church during worship. While soft, ambient lighting may enhance one’s experience of the divine, it can get to be a problem if one cannot see to read Prayer Book, Hymnal, or Service Bulletin.
The problem is that during the installation of the speaker cabinets for the new organ, we were forced to move some electrical conduits and wiring that supplied electricity to the overhead lighting. In the course of this work, Dr. Charlie Marth, our resident electrician, discovered some severely burned and dangerous wiring in the boxes to which the light fixtures were mounted. This discovery led to the calling in of our electrical contractor, Dale Burrus, whom we had already scheduled to replace the overhead fans in the Nave. Upon further inspection, Dale and his crew discovered that basically all of the wiring overhead needed to be replaced–especially that which supplied the hanging lights in the aisle, which was the original 1922 post and knob installation–in order to make our worship space safe and bring it up to code.
Obviously, this project developed into a much more extensive piece of work than we had anticipated, but again, your safety and the preservation of our beautiful and venerable buildings must always be our primary concerns. The work began this morning, Tuesday, January 10, and will proceed until completed. If, for any reason, we have to move worship to another location because of this work, we will let you know as soon as possible.
Again, thank you for your patience as we undertake this most important project for the safety and practicality of our facilities. We will have the lights back on as quickly as possible. Also, since this work had not been included in our budget projections for 2012, any gifts made to St. Andrew’s and earmarked for this project will be greatly appreciated. We welcome any questions that you may have about this wiring project, and you may direct them to Gary Morehouse, Jr. Warden, Ray Sherrow, Sr. Warden, or the rector.
